Lone Duck Marketing

Do you feel like a lone duck?

Is Anybody Listening?

I read a really good article from Third Sector New England called Managing the Media – One Nonprofit’s Publicity Predicament.  This article talks about a case study for Peer Health Exchange a nonprofit that works with high school health education.  Peer Health was worried that negative media would affect their efforts in this area, and there seemed to be a fair amount of negative media.  Up to this point Peer Health Exchange was afraid to approach the media and intentionally was flying under the radar.  They now feel like they are ready to approach the media and here is one of the things that was recommended to them.

Tie in Relevant News Stories

It’s important to find links between current news stories and the work your organization is doing. For example, much of PHE’s health curriculum focuses on highly relevant topics for teens: making healthier choices about diet and exercise, staying away from abusive relationships, and avoiding alcohol and drugs.

These topics are frequently covered in the media, especially when a drug- or abuse-related tragedy occurs. Utilize Twitter to efficiently track news headlines, and be ready to jump when relevant stories break.

We totally agree. Social breaks the barriers between you and your supporters.  You are no longer hostage to big media so get your message out by blogging and social media channels.  Interact with your community, share your expertise, share relevant stories create as much good content as you can.  Your stories are important – share them. Nothing is stopping you.
