South Shore Elder Services – Diane Sargent

Home» Media » South Shore Elder Services – Diane Sargent

Written by: Tom Beach, Executive Director & Vice President of The Toolbox, Inc. and Video Director at the October 22 Non-profit Toolbox event.

Lisa Morressey from The Non-Profit Toolbox interviews Diane Sargent Director of Corporate Relations of South Shore Elder Services.

South Shore Elder Services is a private non-profit organization that is primarily funded by the State of Massachusetts with some addition Federal Funds. State funds support their Home Care Services and Federal Funds supports grants to local communities. The Home Care program ties into their mission to keep seniors in their homes as long as it is safe to do so. To accomplish this they provide in-home services primarily to seniors that really can’t afford these services. Services include: supplying homemakers, sending seniors to adult social services or day care, medical transportation, lifeline – the personal medical emergency system and more. They deliver over 1300 meals daily to home bound seniors through their Meals on Wheels program. They work with 11 South Shore towns and have 27 sister agencies in Massachusetts.

Read highlights from the interview below

Diane sees many of the same challenges as most Non-Profits during these tough economic times – that funds are tight. They have experienced staff reductions already and may be facing more. This has a direct impact on their ability to deliver services to seniors.

They also have a privately funded special needs fund for seniors. This program helps seniors on a one time basis with funds for anything from food and medicine to hearing aids. Every dollar collected for that fund goes directly into services for seniors.

Diane tells a compelling story about helping a senior in need and gives a treat testimonial to Janet LaBerge of . This is a great story about how SS Elder Services works coordinates services for seniors.

South Shore Elder Services next event is their Meals on Wheels Walk November 22, 2009.
